| Canadian customers lately. We used to ship UPS. The duties and taxes on had to be paid on all our UPS shipments (ground and express) before the customers received their packages. We changed to FedEx about 9 months ago and we started shipping ground to Canada as usual. A few months later we start getting bills from FedEx for the duties and taxes for all the shipments. After throwing a fit with FedEx we found out that for ground shipments to Canada that they do not require the duties and taxes paid up front. They send the customer a bill after the fact, three times actually. If the customers doesn't pay up in 90 days they send us a bill, it then becomes our responsibility. Words can't describe how stupid and backwards I feel about this. Since we have an account and are a business it's not like we can just not pay it. Interesting thing about it to me is that like 5% of the Canadian customers we sent packages to actually paid. So before we know it we had over 50 bills sitting here at Z1. I was/am furious that FedEx would put it back on us and that the customers wouldn't own up and pay instead of sticking it back to us. Anyway turns out that the duties and taxes on FedEx express shipments have to be paid up front. So needless to say we no longer ship anything to Canada via a ground service. Regarding how we value the shipments to Canada, we would prefer not to value them low because if they get lost or damaged, well FedEx is only going to cover what we value them at. So in turn, in the event of loss or damage we are only going to give you the amount you wanted your shipment valued at. Which gets to be a really sticky situation when it's all just verbal commitments.
